DREAM was a unification of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream and Random Actor, a physically interactive projection system which uses computational vision and machine learning to create a manipulatable playing space. When creating Bottom’s mask, which represents his transformation into a donkey (or, more accurately, an ass), I chose a design with sharp lines and strong shapes that would interact will with Random Actor. The line from Act III, “name his name, and let half his face be seen through the lion’s neck,” inspired me to utilize cut-outs and windows in the lower half of the mask to expose the actor’s face and expression.
